          Why Merino Wool?

          Moisture Wicking

Minus33 Merino Wool regulates the amount of moisture on your skin by absorbing any moisture or sweat on your body. Then, the absorbed moisture evaporates out of the fabric into the atmosphere.

          Anti-Microbial

Merino Wool fibers naturally reject any bacteria in moisture or sweat as it is wicked away, so foot fungus and smelly odor will not be a problem while wearing our products.

          Insulates When Wet

Wool will absorb up to 30% of its weight in moisture without feeling wet or clammy. If you do get wet, wool will insulate you better than cotton or polyester materials.

          Fire Resistant

Merino Wool insulates against high temperatures and does not readily catch fire. If it does, it self-extinguishes. When Merino burns, it doesn’t melt and stick to the skin like synthetic fabrics do.

          UV Protection

Don’t worry about sunburn on a sunny day summiting a peak. Lightweight layers have a UPF rating of 25. Midweight and Expedition have a UPF rating of 50+.

          Renewable

Merino Wool has a low environmental footprint and naturally returns to the elements. Shear a merino sheep in the morning, and in the afternoon they’re happily nibbling their way towards renewing next season’s clip.

          I Purchased Expedition…

I Purchased Expedition Weight Katmai Bottoms And Yukon Crew Top In December 2019 For The January 2020 Missouri Deer Season. Was Not Sure I Wanted To Spend This Much However After Seeing Reviews I Thought I Would Try Them. Why Did I Wait? These Were The Most Comfortable And Warm Base Layers I Have Ever Owned. I Also Purchased The Mid Weight Balaclava In Mossy Oak Breakup. When It Arrived I Thought This Item Can't Be That Good As It Was So Thin. Again I Was Wrong. In 20 Degree Windy Conditions I Was Very Comfortable. These Are Quality Products And Worth The Price.

          Katmai Base layer 400 gram

The weather for duck hunting in Arkansas is strange. One day it might be 60 and you are swatting bugs or the next it might be 35 for the high. The sort of hunt that we partake in involves sitting for hours at a time in subfreezing conditions with little or movement. Getting to the blind involves a boat ride of about 20 minutes at 5AM I am getting older and I find that I am more susceptible to cold than I was in my younger days. I have some merino wool blend bottom I wear as a layer under some fleece wader pants then a pair of windproof and water repellent bibs on top. This particular setup has always served me well, but I thought there might be something better out there.
I always wanted a 100 percent merino wool base layer but did not want to pay the price. Finally I pulled the trigger after doing some research, found the 400 gram wool was about the best. Minus 33 was listed in the top ten brands. I ordered directly from the company instead of ordering through a secondary retailer. I called and ordered the bottoms, they were expensive but I felt this was the best bang for the buck. The customer service lady was excellent and my package arrive in less than a week.
After ordering I felt a little apprehensive but the package arrived and all that vanished. The bottoms are not heavy. The fit is excellent, I wore them around the house for several days as duck season was not yet open. I am going on a hunt in 2 days where the projected low will be about 25F. Will continue the review after the hunt.
Wore them on a hunt the low was 24 degrees and the wind was blowing about 25mph out of the north. The new merino 400 gram bottoms did the trick and I was warm all morning.
I do recommend the Minus33 brand and will purchase the top at a later date. 5 stars for excellent merchandise and customer service. They are made in China, but don’t let that influence your decision not to purchase. Quality is excellent.

Thank you for the in depth review as well as the ongoing feedback! As always just reach out to us if you need anything we'll be happy to assist!

          Decent but pricey

I bought these for one very specific reason. I love riding my Harley and the spring & fall here in New England can be quite chilly and even colder when riding. I bought these in hopes I wouldnt need my chaps(as much). So I rode on the 1st day of spring 3/20/22 and the air temp was 55 degrees with little to no sun most of the day. My legs stayed warm for a little while but the constant wind riding creates started to eventually make my legs cool(not cold but cool). I was a little disappointed because I ride at even colder temps so if my legs were cool at 55 I know I will need these merino wool bottoms AND my chaps at any temps below 55. So I only gave 3 stars for this reason as well as they are made in China! I paid 140.00 for these and to find out they are made in China was kind of a kick in the gut! I dont mind paying up to help support hard working Americans but to pay this price for something made in China...NO THANKS!

          Zososhep,

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We apologize for any disappointment that you may have with your Minus33 Men's Katmai Bottoms. Here is some brief history of our company that may provide some insight into why we source some of our products abroad. The parent company of Minus33 is L.W. Packard, a textile company created by our current president's great-great-grand-uncle in 1916. We were able to successfully run this textile mill for 86 years until, in 2002, the politics of globalization caused our president's father to finally go out of business as one of the last textile mills in America. He had to fire 300 employees, most of them friends and family that he grew up with. After that, he started a 100% merino wool base layer company which is now the Minus33 you know today.
Recently, we have purchased several sock knitting machines and set them up in Ashland NH on the historic grounds of the L.W. Packard Mill. We learned how to operate these machines and designed the Mountain Heritage Collection of USA-made socks by Minus33. This sock line consists of four different weights of socks, in seven heights, four sizes, and five colors. We are currently looking to purchase more sock machines to make more weights of socks in the near term. Additionally, we are looking at purchasing machines that can produce hats and gloves in our mill in the next several years.
Rebuilding USA manufacturing is a very difficult process due to the trade laws put in place several decades ago, and we expect it to take time, but we assure you that we are working on it. We ask that if you feel strongly about bringing back production to the USA please contact your local reps and let them know that you're interested in seeing less globalization and more American-made products.
Thank you for purchasing from Minus33!
Stay safe while on your Harley this season.
