Minnesota is full of past times, from snowmobiling to the opener of deer season in the fall. There is one particularly close to my heart and that is the start of spring walleye. The season begins in the early part of May and offers some the best and most exciting fishing action in the country. Across the state of Minnesota, the walleye opener is treated as a holiday as people from all over wet a line chasing these fish. My walleye season starts like most others in the heart of central Minnesota on Leech Lake. I tend to use the full line of Minus33 base layers because conditions can become brutal. This year was above average in terms of temps, so I dressed light, using most of my light tees and light long sleeves to keep me cool during the mornings and afternoons. Rain is usually present at some point as well and it helps keep me cool and dry under a rain suit. Minus33 shines for long days on the water where changing weather is always possible. Once mid-June hits, walleye tend to head to deep humps located in big lake basins. The days are long and hot and very drawn out. Getting a bite isn’t as easy as putting something in front of their face. Minus33 allows me to stay out longer and have better luck with the fish on these days. Persistence and patience is key to landing a sizable number of fish and being able to stay out in the hotter days of summer.
