Opt Outside for Thanksgiving Holiday

Opting Outside for the Holidays

The holiday season is a time when, as a society, we all get caught up materialistic behaviors and other unhealthy habits. Less time is typically spent outdoors in an effort to prepare for the holidays. This Thanksgiving, I vowed that I would spend time outside and moving before indulging in dinner.

In the Lehigh Valley of eastern Pennsylvania, where I spent Thanksgiving this year, there is an abundance of great places to hike and spend time in nature. The Appalachian Trail even passes through the area. The morning of Thanksgiving Day, my girlfriend, her sister, our dogs, and I went on a relaxing hike through the Trexler Nature Preserve. The weather was perfect. It was warm enough where I only needed my Isolation Midweight Wool 1/4 Zip and a pair of leggings. I started out with a pair of Minus33 wool gloves as well, but found they were not necessary once we got moving.

Along the way we saw Buffalo and Elk in the game preserve. There was a little snow on the ground, but it was mostly melted. It was an easy and fun hike that allowed us to burn some calories before filling up on turkey and stuffing.

While many were out shopping the following Saturday, we took a family member’s 1981 Jeep Wrangler wheeling an hour away in Tremont PA. We spent the entire day navigating up mountains and through water holes. After hours of being thrown around in the back seat of the Jeep, we stopped for a picnic with a view and talked about what our next adventure would be when we were all together again. White water rafting in Virginia? Or maybe a family trip on the AT?
