United States Luge Foundation Joins the Global #GivingTuesday Movement and Pledges to Raise $4,000 in One Day to Outfit Luge Athletes
LAKE PLACID, N.Y. – The U.S. Luge Foundation has joined #GivingTuesday, a global day of generosity that harnesses the collective power of individuals, communities and organizations to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate giving worldwide.

Occurring this year on November 28, #GivingTuesday is held annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving (in the U.S.) and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday to kick off the holiday season of giving. Its goal is to inspire people to collaborate in improving their local communities and to give back in impactful ways to the charities and causes they support.
This is the U.S. Luge Foundation’s first year participating in #GivingTuesday. The goal to raise $4,000 in one day was made to help #outfitanathlete and keep the cost of entry into the sport lower. It is vital that the team is outfitted with specialized equipment, as well as safe and consistent sleds for young athletes to learn their new sport.
“We want to provide athletes with the gear they need so they can concentrate on learning the ins and outs of the sport,” said Mark Grimmette, USA Luge’s sport program director. “This also helps reduce the cost of entry into the sport. If we didn’t help supply the equipment and sleds then families would have to pay up to $2,000 more in order to participate in luge.”
92Y − a cultural center in New York City that, since 1874, has been bringing people together around its core values of community service and giving back − conceptualized #GivingTuesday as a new way of linking individuals and causes to strengthen communities and encourage giving. In 2016, the fifth year of #GivingTuesday, millions of people in 98 countries came together to give back and support the causes they believe in. Over $177 million was raised online to benefit a tremendously broad range of organizations, and much more was given in volunteer hours, donations of food and clothing, and acts of kindness.
